Terrorism Survival - On Our Soil

How you prepare for terrorism survival depends on where you are in the world. We write from the perspective of U.S. citizens. The Land of the Free is on guard for terrorist attacks. Anthrax in the mail, car bombs, airplane hijackings, and sniper attacks are just a few of the ways that we have been attacked in recent years.

As Homeland Security warns us, terror plots are ever growing and eventually more will be carried out on U.S. soil. We need to be prepared to survive these attacks. All Americans need to be prepared.

But how do we prepare for an attack if we don't know what form of warfare is coming? As an individual, was there any way to prepare for 9/11?

What we are suggesting is that beyond your basic emergency preparedness, there are some things to consider in this new world we're living in. Take care of the basics first. Be prepared for extreme weather, roadside emergencies, and family crises. But don't forget that we have enemies around the world. When it comes to terror, we are all on the front lines.

We have three subsections regarding specific types of terror attacks. But here are some general guidelines to follow:

  1. Don't Panic! But react quickly.
  2. If possible, get yourself to safety.
  3. Alert others of the danger if they act unaware.
  4. If you think you have been exposed to a poisonous agent, remove your clothing and wash your body. Then get emergency medical help.
  5. Notify the authorities.
  6. Stay informed. Watch or listen to the news to find out if there is any follow-up you need to do.

If you live near a metropolitan area, with skyscrapers, financial centers, and military bases, you must be prepared. If you work anywhere that symbolizes America's economic strength you must be vigilant. Report anything suspicious to security - immediately.

The first type of terrorism we're covering is biological warfare. Learn what it is and what to do about it.

The second type of a terrorist attack is chemical warfare. Although a chemical attack would be unexpected and difficult to protect against, some basic knowledge may help. Check here for survival tips and gear.

Our third and final subsection under terrorism survival covers nuclear survival. This page considers what you may be able to do in the event of an atomic attack and how to protect yourself from fallout. There is also some information on potassium iodide.
