Emergency Supplies You Should Have on Hand
Here's a checklist you can use to make sure you have the basic emergency supplies every home should stock. If you live in a particularly
hot/cold/rainy
climate be sure to adjust the list as necessary. - Water – 3 gallons per person (minimum)
- Water Bottles or Collapsible Water Jug (to carry water if needed)
- Food – 3-day supply (minimum) of non-perishable food
- Formula and Diapers if you have a baby (extra water for formula)
- Camp stove and fuel (enough to cook at least 3 meals for 3 days)
- Can opener (non-electric)
- Cell Phone with hand-crank charger
- Battery-powered radio with extra batteries
- Flashlight that does not require batteries (shake or crank style)
- Whistle
- First Aid Kit
- Blankets (1 per person)
- Ponchos, Jackets, and Knit Hats/Beanies (depending on climate)
- Respiratory mask
- Toiletries
- Moist Wipes (preferably anti-bacterial)
- Wrench or pliers (screwdrivers are handy too)
- Garbage bags
- Duct Tape
- Identification (also medical insurance cards and alert bracelets)
- Notepad and pens or pencils (reading material is also nice)
You can simplify this project by purchasing a
survival kit,
a
first aid kit,
and browsing our
online store
for other supplies. Other things to keep in mind: - Keep your car's gas tank at least half-way full
- Keep a survival kit in your car as well as your house
- Strap your hot water heater to the wall (for earthquakes)
- Don't use tap water until you hear that it is safe
- Beware of power lines that may have fallen
