Dam Disasters

Dam disasters can cause local flooding that results in loss of wildlife, human life, and property. But they're not natural disasters.

So why do we include them?

The disaster that a dam break can render certainly falls under emergency preparation and survival. We include it here because of its relationship to flooding. However, we are only providing the most basic information.

Be aware that not all dams are administered by the government. They are not all in top condition.

Familiarize yourself with all bodies of water near your home. Find out if there are any dams or levees and if there is an associated Emergency Action Plan. You should be able to assess whether you are in any danger should there be a dam break.

If you are potentially in harm's way, prepare your home for the possibility of flooding. Determine whee you would evacuate to. Purchase flood insurance.

Flood insurance is not part of your regular homeowner's insurance. FEMA maintains a flood zone map of the entire United States and they update it from time to time. If you are in a flood zone and there is a mortgage on the house, then your lender will require you to have it. However, you can still be in jeopardy of a flood without being in a flood zone.

In the event the dam breaks, gather your family together. If you have time to evacuate do so immediately. If floodwaters are already upon you, then stay together, stay calm, and follow our flood disaster tips.
